Berlin has a terrible and haunting past, as we all know, but I admire their acknowledgement of this history; they do not ignore their awful past, but instead, they recognise it in various ways. Much of the city was destroyed during World War II, and a lot of what remained was later torn down in the 1950s and 60s, so most of the city’s buildings are very modern, compared to the majority of European cities, providing an interesting and eclectic assortment of architectural styles.
The city mostly offers pretty good, albeit generic German food, with a few local additions, including Currywurst, a common streetfood, and ‘Waldmeister’, a green beer. Personal advice: go for the Currywurst and avoid the gross beer! Also, and this should really go without saying, but eat as many pretzels as humanly possible. Pretzels. Are. The. Best.
Famous, beautiful 18th Century neoclassical Brandenburg Gate.Currywurst! I tried this at a pub, and not from a street vendor, but it was delicious regardless! Great German sausage and fries, covered in a curry sauce. Great with a cold German beer!Bakery breakfast! Iced matcha smoothie, caramel latte, a chocolate hazelnut croissant stick, and apple pain aux raisins.Wiener schnitzel with fries and salad. This is the meal you want from Germany! A real German pretzel, cheeses, meats, pickled stuff, extra bread (rye, of course) and cold beer. I was in heaven! Many parts of the city are left to show what WWII did to the city. Left as a visual reminder of their past, and the consequences of their actions, many buildings and structures still feature bullet holes and shrapnel in the structure. This building, on World Heritage Site Museum Island, chose to clean up and restore the majority of the building and its pillars, but left one of the pillars as a permanent reminder.
