Brussels

By Kiersten Eats

Brussels is the best city of you want a good Belgian beer, or life-changing waffles. The chocolate is incredible, too – as one would expect! It’s a pretty dirty city, and parts are definitely a little sketchy and should be avoided – but the heart of the city has plenty of charm. The Grand Place, which is their city square, is stunning, and the streets surrounding (like the one pictured below) are filled with lovely little shops and chocolate boutiques – so stick to those areas, and you will love Brussels!

There is no shortage of places to find an authentic Belgian waffle (you’ll be surprised – what you’ve been eating all these years as a “Belgian” waffle is wrong and your eyes will be opened!!), and you can get a spectacular array of toppings. Fries are everywhere, too – entire stores dedicated just to fries (which I was 100% okay with!).

You’ll also find about a million chocolate shops – and I’m pretty sure I entered each and every one of them, just to enjoy the smell! Okay that’s a lie – the smell may have been the reason I entered, but I definitely bought something in most of them! Just decide in advance that your lunch is going to be chocolate that day, and just be okay with it. Tomorrow can be for vegetables.

Little shop-filled street right off the Grand Place square.
Brussels’ stunning Town Hall; an impressive gothic structure, and the only remaining medieval building in the Square.
Inside Brasserie-Brouwerij Cantillion, a small but world-famous brewery, featuring spontaneously-fermented beers. The self-guided tour includes a couple of samples of their world-renowned beers, but you can purchase more if desired.
The most incredible fries I’ve ever had! Served in a paper cone, covered in whatever sauce your heart desires. My absolute dream come true!!
Let me tell you: REAL Belgian waffles are heavy, dense, and have the most incredible, sweet, yeasty flavour! Best served (in my opinion) covered in Nutella, but my husband just chose fresh strawberries to top his waffle (… mine was better!).
Drink as much beer as possible in Belgium. It’s a must!
