Inspired by my favorite childhood movie, these Parent Trap Cookies take the twins' iconic snack from the film and turn it into a cookie! An easy 1-bowl peanut butter cookie dough is studded with PB chips and Oreo pieces, for the most nostalgic treat this millennial could dream of!

Parent Trap Cookies are nostalgic flavors meets nostalgic movie, in delicious cookie form!

If you grew up watching The Parent Trap approximately 4,000 times like I did, you already know exactly what I’m talking about. Hallie and Annie knew exactly what they were doing here!

The film came out when I was a kid, and I wanted to find a long-lost identical twin SO BADLY! And then snack on Oreos and peanut butter together, obviously.

So naturally, I turned their iconic snack into a cookie … because that’s my whole thing lately; combining my TV/film nerdiness with my baking nerdiness!

These cookies are a thick cookie packed with TONS of peanut butter flavor, loaded with peanut butter chips, and plenty of chopped Oreos. You could use mini Oreos instead of chopping Oreos, if preferred.

The best part? These cookies are a super easy 1-bowl recipe. And while I do recommend chilling the dough for the best texture and flavor, it’s not vital, so you can bake and enjoy immediately if your PB and Oreo cravings simply cannot wait.

Summer camp vibes, no long-lost twins required.

My Love Letter to The Parent Trap

The Parent Trap came out in theatres when I was 10 years old. I begged my parents to take me back to see it again and again. I think I saw it four times in the theatre!

I refused to believe that one actress played both parts! I swore they looked a bit different (at least, before Annie’s haircut and switcharoo makeover!), and I absolutely accepted Annie was English.

I loved both parents. I loved Martin and Chessy. I loved Sammy the dog (I had Golden Retrievers at home and still believe they’re the best dogs ever). I hated Meredith (didn’t we all!?)

But as a young girl with just a little brother, all I really wanted a BFF twin sister!

The movie shaped so much for me. I lived with my hair in a claw clip for YEARS because Hallie looked so cool in one. I wanted to grow up and design wedding dresses because Elizabeth made it seem so classy. I wanted to live in California or London because both looked incredible.

But most of all? The Parent Trap encouraged my peanut butter obsession (something that wasn’t super common in Australia) and taught me to scoop it with Oreos.

Has a simpler, more delicious treat ever graced the big screen? As a 10-year-old, I sure didn’t think so.

Why You’ll Love These Parent Trap Cookies

  • Easy 1-bowl recipe
  • No mixer required
  • Tons of peanut butter flavor
  • Loaded with PB chips and Oreo chunks
  • Inspired by one of the greatest movie snacks of all time
  • Perfect for movie nights (or any nostalgic millennial gatherings)

The Secret to Maximum Peanut Butter Flavor

I prefer using natural peanut butter in these cookies, because it provides a stronger roasted peanut flavor in baking, and a thicker cookie. Just make sure your peanut butter is VERY well stirred before using, so no weird dry bits or oily pockets make their way into the cookie dough.

Science of Baking Moment: Why Oreos Stay Crunchy

One of my favorite things about these cookies is the contrast between the soft cookie and the Oreo pieces.

Because Oreos are so low in moisture, the larger chunks stay slightly crisp after baking. Instead of disappearing into the dough, they create little pockets of chocolate cookie crunch throughout every bite. Texture magic! Just note that they will soften as the cookies sit, however.

PB Oreo Cookie Ingredient Highlights:

  1. Natural Peanut Butter: Use a creamy natural peanut butter that’s been thoroughly stirred. It provides the strongest peanut flavor – but if all you have is conventional, that will work, too.
  2. Light Brown Sugar: Adds moisture and chewiness while bringing subtle butterscotch notes that pair perfectly with peanut butter.
  3. Granulated Sugar: Helps the cookies spread slightly and contributes to those lightly crisp edges.
  4. Eggs + an extra yolk: Use large eggs that are about 55-60 grams in shell – and don’t skip the extra yolk! It adds richness and chewiness. More on Eggs in Baking here.
  5. Peanut Butter Chips: Enhances the ooey-gooey PB cookie goodness. Feel free to use chocolate chips instead, if preferred, but I love the stronger PB flavor.
  6. Oreos: Chop the cookies into quarters, for the best textural contrast throughout the dough. We’ll use plenty inside the dough, and top the cookies with even more once baked.

Tips for the Best Parent Trap Cookies

  1. Weigh Your Ingredients: Measuring ingredients (especially flour!) using a digital kitchen scale is the simplest and best way to improve your baking forever!
  2. Don’t Overmix: Once the flour is added, mix only until everything is just combined. Overmixing develops gluten, which can create tough cookies.
  3. Decorate the Tops: Press a few extra PB chips and Oreo pieces onto each dough ball right when they come out of the oven, for bakery-style cookies.
  4. Slightly Underbake: The cookies should look set around the edges while the centers still appear slightly soft. They’ll continue cooking from residual heat as they cool, creating perfectly chewy centers.

How to Store Parent Trap Cookies

Store completely-cooled Parent Trap Cookies inside an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days.

You can also freeze the cookie dough, once shaped, for up to a month inside a freezer bag or airtight freezer-safe container. To bake, thaw the dough overnight in the fridge and bake as directed below.

Parent Trap Cookie Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the Best Peanut Butter for Baking?

I love using well-stirred natural PB, for the strongest flavor. Conventional peanut butter works too, though the peanut flavor may be slightly less pronounced and your cookies might be a little thinner.

I don’t really recommend using crunchy PB here, but if that’s all you have, feel free to experiment and give it a try.

Do I Have to Use Peanut Butter Chips?

If you prefer to use chocolate chips instead, feel free! I love the extra PB flavor, but if you’re more of a chocolate fan, you can swap out for any other mix-ins at a 1:1 ratio.

Can I Make the Cookie Dough Ahead of Time?

Absolutely! The dough can be refrigerated for up to 48 hours before baking (just make sure it’s well covered with plastic wrap or stored inside an airtight container, to prevent the dough from drying out).

I actually prefer to chill the dough for 24 hours before baking it, for thicker, chewier cookies with the best PB-forward flavor.

Servings 28 large cookies, approximately

Ingredients

  • 1 stick (113 grams) unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 ¼ cups (338 grams) natural peanut butter, very well stirred so there’s no dry clumps
  • 1 cup (200 grams) light brown sugar
  • ¾ cup (150 grams) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs + 1 large yolk, separated when cold and then brought to room temperature
  • 1 Tablespoon (12 grams) vanilla extract
  • 1 Tablespoon (14 grams) milk, any kind
  • 2 ¾ cups (358 grams) all-purpose flour, measured correctly – too much flour will make hard cookies
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ¾ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 cup (170 grams) peanut butter chips
  • 12 (137 grams) Oreo cookies, quartered, plus 7 additional cookies (100 grams) for decorating, if desired

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F. Line large rimmed baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • In a large microwave-safe bowl, microwave butter and peanut butter until melted. Whisk carefully to combine. Add the brown sugar and granulated sugar, and whisk together to combine. If the mixture is hot, set aside to cool until just warm.
  • Add the eggs, egg yolk, vanilla, and milk to the cooled mixture. Whisk well to combine.
  • Add the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Stir with a very sturdy spatula until almost combined.
  • Add the peanut butter chips and quartered Oreos and mix in until just combined, being careful not to over-mix.
  • Using a large 3-Tablespoon spring-loaded cookie scoop, portion out the dough. Press the dough balls down slightly using your palm, so they're about 1-inch thick.
  • If time permits: Cover the shaped cookie dough well with plastic wrap and chill for 24 hours. This will give you thicker, chewier cookies with a bakery-style texture and a much more prominent PB flavor.
  • When ready to bake, place cookies on baking sheets lined with parchment paper, placed a few inches apart to allow for spreading.
  • Bake for about 9-11 minutes, or until set and lightly golden brown at the edges. Straight out of the oven, press in additional quartered Oreo pieces to decorate the tops of the cookies, if desired. Allow cookies to cool on the baking trays before serving.

Notes

The Peanut Butter: Conventional peanut butter won’t provide as much peanut butter flavor compared to natural PB, and won’t make cookies that are quite as thick – but it still works just fine at a 1:1 ratio if needed.
Correct Measuring: To ensure thick yet moist, chewy cookies, be sure to measure your ingredients (especially your flour) correctly, to avoid accidentally adding too much and accidentally creating dry, hard cookies. Use a digital kitchen scale for best results.
Shaping and Decorating: If desired, immediately out of the oven, run a round cookie cutter (slightly larger in size than the cookies) around the edges of the hot cookies. This pulls their edges in slightly and makes slightly thicker, perfectly round cookies. Do this before pressing in additional quartered Oreo pieces to decorate the tops of the cookies, for the prettiest bakery-worthy cookies.
