Here’s my advice about New Orleans: don’t go near Bourbon Street (okay, one quick stroll – but that’s enough!). It’s dirty, distasteful, and touristy. Once you leave that immediate vicinity, it’s a charming city, full of beautiful buildings, eclectic and interesting people, and utterly unbelievable food. It’s pretty dirty, as a whole, but you can drink outside as you walk around – so you won’t notice the filth as much a few absinthes in!
Café du Monde is a must – get AS MANY beignets in you as humanly possible while in NoLa! Also, drink absinthe! It tastes like black liquorice (which I happen to LOVE), but sweeter, and they prepare it the traditional way, which is really fun to watch. Also, drink Pimm’s Cups. Not commonly seen elsewhere in the USA, Pimm’s Cups are a very British drink, made from a gin-based liqueur, mixed with sparkling lemonade or ginger ale, and served with fruits. It’s delicious and light – perfect for wandering around hot New Orleans!
Oh, and did I mention beignets? EAT. ALLLLLLL. OF. THE. BEIGNETS.
The huge, above-ground cemeteries are one of New Orleans’s most famous icons. Many are in need of maintenance, but they are impressive nonetheless. Take a cemetery tour – the history behind these massive structures is utterly fascinating! Café du Monde’s famous cafés au lait and beignets. I know the beignets don’t look like much, and I expected to have a sugar-overload with all the powdered sugar on top, but I promise, you’ll love them! The beignets alone are the reason I’m dying to go back to NoLa! Just remember this seemingly-obvious tip: don’t inhale the powdered sugar. It happens so easily, even when you think you’re being careful, because of the sheer volume – and it hurts!A delightful little find, Bacchanal is a little restaurant-slash-wine garden, where you can order off the menu, or you can simply pick pre-weighed and wrapped cheese varieties out of their fridge, and their chefs curate accompaniments around your cheese selections! Wines, cocktails, and beer are available for pairing. We picked three cheeses, which their chef paired with nuts, quince paste, olives, pickles and bread – and added their housemade butter. We also ordered their bacon-wrapped dates. We later ordered a second helping of the dates! Their courtyard is open and spacious, and is beautifully private, thanks to the surrounding trees. It’s an original and wonderful restaurant. District Donuts have a few locations, but the Elmwood one is on a pretty street, filled with little shops and fun finds. Their menu is full of sandwiches and sliders, but their doughnuts are not to be missed! The maple bacon is incredible! Their coffee is also fantastic.Remoulade Restaurant was a cool find we stumbled across, basically because I wanted a Pimm’s Cup immediately! Primarily an oyster bar, it’s a lot of fun to sit at the bar and watch their impressive chefs do their thing with shucking oysters! We ended up at Remoulade two days in a row, because the drinks were so good, and their chef at the bar remembered us! The second day, got a Pimm’s Cup to go, as my husband got a Sazerac to go, and we wandered around, listening to street musicians play jazz, while sipping our delicious cocktails. The pretty streets of New Orleans.
