One of my favourite US cities, Boston is beautiful, full of history, with plenty to do and see – from the JFK Library, to the Freedom Trail, to the giant aquarium (although, honestly, as aquariums go, this one’s pretty dull honestly – the best part is the free exhibit outside!).
Of course, my favourite thing about Boston is the lobster rolls! Below, I’ll tell you a couple of my favourite spots for lobster rolls, as well as my favourite cocktail spot, favourite bakery and chocolatier – and where to grab a beer on a hot summer’s day!
While you’re there, try to visit some of Boston’s historical sites along the Freedom Trail, such as the Boston Tea Party Ship & Museum or Old State House (there are some good walking tours that cover all the fascinating history). There are plenty of museums to tour, too. Wander around beautiful Harvard University, and the surrounding neighbourhood of Cambridge – plenty of shopping and fun finds around the pretty area. A fun afternoon can be spent at Quincy Market, which is full of street food-style vendors – but save space for the lobster rolls I point you towards here!
The Bell in Hand Tavern is America’s oldest continuously-running pub. Established in 1795, this tiny little pub features its own beer (made by the local Samuel Adams brewery). The pub mostly offers pretty typical American pub far, but my favourite thing on the menu is their lobster roll. You can pick whether you want it mayonnaise-style or garlic-butter style. I’ve had both, and they’re both delicious! The fries and coleslaw on the side are pretty amazing, too!Famous chocolatier L.A. Burdick also features a bakery section. Fabulous coffee and “drinking chocolate”, cookies, cakes, mousses and pastries are just some of their offerings. Pictured are two lattes, their orange hazelnut cake, and gruyere croissant (which was INCREDIBLE!). Don’t skip their chocolates, either; they’re super expensive, but they’re worth it! Treat yourself to at least one chocolate each, if not a boxed selection, so you don’t miss out on the fabulous flavours. Their delightful staff will also help you pick out your chocolate selections – they’ll ask a few questions about your chocolate and confectionary preferences, and make some recommendations. It’s truly one of my favourite spots for sweets in the entire US. Pretty Boston Harbour makes for an enjoyable summertime walk or boat ride.If cocktails are your thing, visit Boston’s Omni Hotel bar. It’s a beautiful place to stay, but the bar also makes fabulous cocktails! I have enjoyed countless Boston Cream Pie martinis at this hotel bar, which are shaken in an adorable little shaker tableside, and served in front of you, with anything that doesn’t fit in your glass left in the cold shaker beside your drink, for you to top off yourself. I enjoy this little gimmick – and I enjoy the cocktails even more! Another delicious lobster roll can be found at three locations around the city, at Trillium Brewery. Trillium not only makes unbelievably great craft beer, but also some of the most wonderful lobster rolls in the city! Old State House, part of the city’s Freedom Trail.
