The Gold Coast, Australia

By Kiersten Eats

If you know anything about The Gold Coast, Australia, it’s probably about their beaches.

The Gold Coast is home to some of the most incredible beaches on this planet. Pristine white sand and stunning waves make for an absolute Surfer’s Paradise (which just so happens to be the name of one of their most famous beaches!).

The area has become a pretty impressive foodie haven over the past decade, too, boasting countless incredible spots for food and drinks – and dozens of great breweries, too.

Let’s break it all down.

The Beaches of The Gold Coast

Like anywhere known for beaches, there are plenty of ‘touristy’ beaches – but the most jaw-dropping beaches are well off the beaten track.

I never fully appreciated the beaches while living nearby growing up, but distance can often give you such perspective. As an adult, whenever I return, I’m astounded by their beauty and spend a great deal of time soaking up the sun and sand.

Simply known as Main Beach in Surfer’s Paradise, this is one of the city’s more touristy beaches – but if you want to surf, this is the place. Crazily-impressive waves and a stunning view are always promised here.

A little more off the beaten track, my personal favorite beach is Fingal Head, which is about a 1-hour drive south of the Gold Coast. There is often no one there, which makes the experience even more special.

There are a few little islands just off the coast, and the little cove area pictured below is between a couple of Fingal Head’s beaches. There is also a small lighthouse, and plenty of bush area to hike nearby, where you’re likely to see some bush turkeys!

Gold Coast Activities (that aren’t beach-related)

The view from the top of Q1 Tower (which, at the time of building in 2005, was the tallest residential building in the world) is a must-see. Situated in the heart of the Gold Coast, Q1 boasts an incredible view of Surfer’s Paradise below, and countless kilometers of stunning beach and gorgeous blue waves.

You can also enjoy a bite to eat or a coffee while taking in the views from the top of this building, or enjoy their spa services on the ground floor.

You can’t visit Australia without seeing kangaroos! You will see these adorable creatures anywhere and everywhere in parks, clearings, or even residential neighborhoods nearby bush/wooded areas, usually around dawn and dusk.

If you’re staying in the city and not venturing further, check out Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, about 45 minutes south of The Gold Coast. Here, you can get up close and personal with countless types of Australia’s famously adorable wildlife.

The Goldie’s Food Scene

While you’re probably already shopping at one of the GC’s thriving malls, don’t miss Robina Town Centre‘s ‘The Kitchens’, their elaborate and beautiful array of eateries. I’ve had many an unforgettable meal at The Kitchens.

Pictured below is my affogato from The Kitchens, with salted burnt caramel ice cream, vanilla ice cream, with Bailey’s chocolate liqueur, honeycomb crumbles, and espresso you pour on yourself. Heavenly!

I don’t think I’ve come across anywhere that serves a better curry in all my years of travels than Labrador’s Tandoor & Curry Hut Indian Restaurant. They have an extensive curry menu, as well as your traditional appetizers and sides, all executed to perfection. Plus, their garlic naan bread is the best I’ve had anywhere!

Brisbane, Australia

And while you’re in the area anyway, take a trip an hour north to Brisbane, the state’s capital. The extensive railway system makes it an easy trip there and back, and the cute and easily-walkable city is worth seeing.

From the free museums to its delightful architecture, don’t sleep on this terrific day trip.

Brisbane’s Food Scene

In the heart of the Brisbane city center is Storia on Queen; a delightful little Italian bistro with fabulous cocktails, great pizza, and incredible desserts. Pictured below is my white chocolate semi-freddo with hazelnut praline, fresh strawberries, and house-made fairy floss (aka cotton candy).

While you’re in Brisbane, be sure to check out the West End area – it’s full of fabulous eateries, breweries, and fun little shops. This amazing garlic bread was from Brewhouse, where we also enjoyed a few flights of beer.
