These Rocky Cookies are inspired by everyone’s favorite alien from Project Hail Mary and yes, they’re just as lovable as the real thing (minus the existential space crisis).

Rocky Cookies are soft, thick sugar cookies made with dark brown sugar for a rich, caramelized flavor (and to give Rocky his color). But the real magic? They’re shaped to resemble Rocky himself, complete with his little “eyes” made from blue candy.

And the best part: they’re actually easy. No complicated decorating, no royal icing, no stress. It’s a simple one-bowl recipe that’s pressed into a Rocky-shaped log, chilled briefly, sliced, and baked – perfect for Project Hail Mary watch parties.

They’re a little nerdy yet deeply lovable and perfectly sweet. Just like Rocky.

All your friends will be exclaiming, “Amaze! Amaze! Amaze!” 👎;)

  • Soft sugar cookies with rich butterscotch-y notes
  • Fun, adorable, character-shaped cookies without complicated decorating
  • Customizable “eyes” – use any blue candy you like!
  • Perfect for book lovers, sci-fi fans, and baking nerds alike

A Quick Tribute to Rocky

Rocky is chaotic good energy in loveable alien form. He solves impossible problems like it’s a casual hobby, and over the course of the book/film (spoiler alert), he becomes the best fictional friend you didn’t know you needed. He’s like the warm hug we all need right now.

So naturally, he deserved to be turned into a cookie.

Baking Science Moment: Making Rocky Cookies That Hold Their Shape

Character cookies can go very wrong very fast – but these babies work because of a few intentional choices:

1. Flour Ratio = Structure

The flour amount here is slightly higher than your average soft sugar cookie, for a stronger structure and less spread, so Rocky stays recognizable. Use a digital kitchen scale to ensure precision.

2. Controlled Leavening = No Over-Spreading

This was the trickiest part to nail in this recipe, because too much baking soda or powder causes too much spread – and I wanted to avoid Rocky morphing into a blob.

These cookies use a carefully balanced amount of leavening (baking powder only) so the cookies just rise slightly, for a pleasant-to-eat texture without losing their shape too much in the oven.

It’s the difference between “Rocky Cookies” and “mysterious cookie blob.”

3. Dark Brown Sugar for Flavor + Moisture

Here, we’re using exclusively dark brown sugar, for a higher molasses content that provides a richer, deeper flavor, and creates perfectly soft sugar cookies. Plus, its natural coloring helps Rocky look like Rocky!

If needed, light brown sugar will work just fine at a 1:1 ratio – just note that your Rocky Cookies will be lighter in color and may not be quite as soft.

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • Cold unsalted butter
  • Dark brown sugar
  • A large egg (learn why egg size is important in baking here)
  • Vanilla extract
  • All-purpose flour
  • Cornstarch
  • Baking powder
  • Salt
  • And blue candy for Rocky’s eyes. More on this just below.

How to Make Rocky’s Eyes

I tested various versions of Rocky, using rock candy (I picked out the blue ones from a mixed pack I found at my grocery store), blue Pop Rocks, and chopped blue Cadbury Mini Eggs. I found the rock candy worked best, but they were all successful.

If you use something like a blue jellybean or gummy candies, I recommend popping small pieces of those into the warm cookies straight out of the oven, rather than before baking, as I don’t think those types of candies would bake well and might melt all over the place.

How to Shape Rocky Cookies

This is where things get fun:

  1. Once the dough is made, dump the whole batch on a large piece of plastic wrap.
  2. Shape the dough into a rough log, about 16″ long.
  3. Gently shape the whole log into a rough trapezoid (don’t overthink it – Rocky isn’t perfectly symmetrical anyway). Use the plastic wrap to smooth the dough out.
  4. Place in the fridge to chill for at least an hour, or until completely firm.
  5. Once you’re ready to bake, slice the log into 1/4-inch slices.
  6. Use some slices to cut into ‘limbs’ and place on either side of the ‘body’ slices.
  7. Press blue candy pieces into the dough randomly for his “eyes.”

Tips for Amaze-Level Rocky Cookies

  • Don’t overwork the dough. The more you handle the dough, the softer it gets and the more spreading you may have. Mix until it just comes together.
  • No need to overthink the shape. The cookies’ edges may soften slightly in the oven, but that’s okay – Rocky isn’t a perfectly squared-off shape anyway!
  • Use sturdy candy for the eyes. Rock candy works great because it holds up to heat without melting into oblivion. Pop Rocks, swizzle candies, and chopped blue chocolate all work fine, too.
  • Bake until just set. Rocky’s edges should be lightly golden and just set.

How to Store Rocky Cookies

Store unbaked dough wrapped tightly in plastic wrap in the fridge for up to 3 days, or in the freezer (inside an airtight container) for up to 3 months. Baked, completely cooled cookies can be stored inside an airtight container for up to 4 days.

Rocky Cookie Frequently Asked Questions

Do These Cookies Actually Look Like Rocky?

I think so! Paying careful attention to the amount of flour (use a digital kitchen scale for best results) and chilling the dough until solid makes all the difference here.

And if your cookies aren’t perfect, they’ll still look like Rocky in the ways that matter: charming, slightly chaotic, and instantly recognizable once you get it.

What Candy Works Best for Rocky’s Eyes?

Anything blue! Try:

  • Blue rock candy
  • Blue Pop Rocks (though I personally didn’t prefer how these looked once baked, and I especially didn’t prefer the flavor it imparted to the cookies)
  • Any blue hard candies
  • Mini M&Ms in blue or even green
  • Any blue candy-coated chocolates (just note these won’t give the ‘glassy’ appearance Rocky’s eyes have)

Avoid baking anything that melts too quickly like gummy candies or jellybeans. If you’re using candies like that, add them to the cookies immediately out of the oven, while the cookies are still hot. This way, they’ll stick to the cookies and look great without melting into weird blue puddles.

Note: Any flavored candies (like Pop Rocks or crushed Jolly Ranchers) will impact the flavor of the cookies.

Help – Why Did my Cookies Spread Too Much?

Usually overspread cookies are due to dough that became too warm, shapes that were sliced too thin, not enough flour (use a scale!) or baking powder that has expired. Learn more in my How to Bake the Perfect Cookies post.

Prep Time 25 minutes

Cuisine American
Servings 16 cookies, approximately

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup (170 grams) unsalted butter, cold, cubed
  • 1 cup (200 grams) dark brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 Tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ¼ cup (293 grams) all-purpose flour, measured correctly (digital scale preferred)
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • blue hard candy, for Rocky’s eyes*

Instructions

  • In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, place the cold, cubed butter and dark brown sugar. Start mixing on low and slowly increase to medium-high until light, fluffy, and slightly lightened in color – about 5 minutes. Stop once or twice to scrape down the bottom and sides of the bowl to ensure it's completely mixed.
  • Add the egg and vanilla extract. Mix on medium speed until incorporated, about 1 minute. Scrape down the bottom and sides of the bowl.
  • Add the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and salt. Mix on low until just incorporated, being careful not overmix.
  • Place a large piece of plastic wrap on a work surface. Transfer dough to the plastic wrap and shape into a log about 16" / 40cm long. Gently shape the log into a rough trapezoid shape, to resemble Rocky's body. My log was about 3/4-inch at the base and 1-inch on top. It doesn't have to be perfect! Use the plastic wrap to smooth each side out. Wrap the log up and transfer to a cutting board. Place in the fridge for at least 1 hour or up to 3 days.
  • When ready to bake, preheat oven to 375°F / 190°C. Line light-colored rimmed baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Using a large, sharp knife, carefully cut the log into slices 1/4-inch thick. Place most of the cookies on prepared pans, spaced at least a couple inches apart.
  • Use some of the slices for Rocky's limbs by cutting a slice into four 'sticks'. Place two limbs directly next to each 'body' slice, a little below the top of his bod for 'arms' and another two limbs below that for 'legs'. Bend the limbs outwards slightly and gently smooth the seams together with your fingertips.
  • Using blue rock candy (see notes), dot a few pieces on the body and limbs for Rocky's eyes. Use a small knife to carefully cut little slits into the end of each limb, to resemble Rocky's 'hands'. If time permits, place the shaped cookies in the fridge for about 10 minutes prior to baking, to ensure the dough is as cold as possible before baking.
  • Bake for 9 to 12 minutes, or until golden brown and set at the edges. Straight out of the oven, if needed, re-shape the 'hands' slightly if the shapes became a little vague during baking.
  • Allow cookies to completely cool on baking pans before serving. Cooled cookies will keep inside an airtight container for about 4 days.

Notes

Rocky’s Eyes: Use any blue hard candy or chocolate with a blue candy coating. I found that picking the blue candies out of a pack of rock candy worked best. Avoid baking anything that may melt too quickly (e.g. gummy candies or jellybeans). If you’re using softer candies, add them to each cookie immediately out of the oven, while the cookies are still hot, so they will stick to the cookies and look great without melting into weird blue puddles. Note that any flavored candies will impact the final cookies’ flavoring, too.
Bake These Cookies COLD: Make sure you chill the dough well before baking, and keep any slices refrigerated while the rest bake. Warm dough will cause Rocky to completely lose his shape, so the colder the dough when it hits the oven, the better.
